An Unscheduled Bestie Briefing

Bestie, please approach the microphone,

ARTICLE I

We interrupt our regularly postponed coffee

We should get together soon. We should have a proper catch-up. We should find a long afternoon and tell each other everything. These are excellent proposals, and I believe some of them are now old enough to apply for their own library cards.

I still want the long afternoon. Until our calendars agree to meet without legal representation, I would like a smaller briefing. One minute from your actual life, whenever it fits. The thing you would tell me before taking your coat off. The update you think is insignificant, which we would somehow discuss until both our drinks were cold. I am already interested. Please don’t make me wait for a major event.

ARTICLE II

Today’s leading story may be extremely minor

I would like the real headlines. A little win. An unexpected plot twist. A decision you made after briefly consulting every possible version of yourself. The thing you are overthinking, underthinking, or definitely going to revisit while brushing your teeth. These are the stories our excellent friendship newsroom exists to cover.

You can also tell me nothing happened. I have heard your account of nothing happening before, and frankly it has strong audience retention. What matters is the way you tell it: the detail you noticed, the expression, the tiny pause before you reveal an opinion that you know is disproportionately firm. The event may be small. The commentary is why I’m here.

The event may be small. The commentary is why I’m here.
ARTICLE III

The correspondent may take off the funny hat

An important editorial note: you do not have to entertain me. I’m fond of the person behind the material. If the jokes department has gone home and the day has simply been a lot, you can say that. I will not return your update with a note asking for a stronger ending.

Tell me when you’re proud of yourself, too. I want the news that doesn’t come with a certificate: you made the call, tried the class, asked for the thing, or stopped doing something that had quietly become too much. The adult world is stingy with gold stars. I cannot correct this institutional failure, but I can remain extremely interested in the victories that mattered to you.

ARTICLE IV

Transmission methods, none of them fancy

Send a video if your eyebrow needs to participate. Send voice if you would rather remain visually off duty. Write a few lines if your thoughts prefer arriving in print. Choose your format. Sixty seconds is a friendly starting point; you can take longer. Some stories need the background, the aside, and the second aside that turns out to be the actual story.

I made this invitation, so what you send comes to me. It doesn’t become an automatic group-chat announcement. You can tell the version meant for this particular friend, while leaving other people’s private business out of it. I do not require privileged information to be entertained. I have previously enjoyed hearing your full assessment of a chair.

ARTICLE V

Breaking news: friendship has room in the week

Skip the briefing when life is full. There is no missed-edition penalty, no apology necessary, and no need to explain that you have been busy being a human with responsibilities. Our correspondents have flexible schedules. Some of them are currently trying to remember why they walked into this room.

I would simply love more small details to go with the big catch-ups. To know what you’re enjoying, what you’re finding difficult, and what new thing has caught your imagination. I love the person I first became friends with, and I want to keep meeting the person you are now. A little update is one lovely way you can introduce me.

OUR LITTLE PROMISE

So, bestie, brief me when you feel like it. The good, the strange, the absolutely uneventful. Your usual voice. Your actual day. I’m delighted we found each other, and I would like continuing access to the very particular way you see the world. Coffee negotiations remain active.

Love, your unpaid and enthusiastic editor
