Dear fellow member of the welcoming committee,
The guest list has one very important addition
There is a small person we haven’t met yet who already features heavily in our conversations. Plans are changing. Objects are being considered. People who once held perfectly moderate views about chairs have begun discussing chairs with the seriousness of urban planners. The guest of honor has not offered an opinion, but somehow remains central to every decision.
I’m inviting you to share a little of this chapter with me before the first hello. Your hopes, your thoughts, the funny thing that happened while preparing. This person may arrive without an introductory speech, so I would love a little account of the welcoming committee while we can still hear ourselves complete a sentence.
The minutes of the tiny-socks meeting
What would you like this little person to know about this time? Perhaps how often they’ve been imagined in ordinary scenes: at a table, on a walk, being shown something for the first time. Perhaps the conversation that turned unexpectedly tender. Perhaps the realization that a sock can be both too small to seem physically useful and apparently something worth buying in quantity.
You can tell me about a name you like, a family habit you hope finds its way forward, or the moment you caught yourself picturing the future differently. Small details matter. Later, people may remember the big news. I would like to hear about the evening someone held up a tiny garment and several competent adults briefly lost their ability to speak normally.
The guest of honor has not offered an opinion, but somehow remains central to every decision.
The committee is made of actual people
We do not have to act like a panel of experts. I suspect the incoming person will eventually discover that we have been improvising in several areas of life already. There is no need to destroy their illusions before arrival, but among ourselves we can admit that the full instruction booklet appears to be missing.
Tell me something from your own story, too. A kindness you received. A thing you learned the awkward way. A memory you would like this child to hear someday. The adults in a family have lives before they acquire their newest titles. I like the idea of making room for those lives now, while we are busy welcoming another one.
No single approved route to this chapter
Families arrive here in different ways, and some stories include long waits, unexpected turns, or details that belong only to the people living them. Share what feels comfortable. You don’t have to supply medical information, explain private decisions, or turn a complicated day into a cheerful update for my benefit.
You may be excited, uncertain, impatient, distracted, or all four before lunch. The committee can cope with a range of feelings. We have already survived prolonged consideration of objects whose main qualification is being washable. A small, honest moment from today is enough. It doesn’t need to represent the whole journey or predict how the next chapter will unfold.
A small record from the welcoming side
Send a video, leave a voice note, or write a few lines, whichever fits. Sixty seconds is a friendly start; take longer if the story needs it. You don’t have to compose a message worthy of a future wedding speech. Something you would say across the kitchen table will have plenty of life in it.
Your contribution comes to me as the host of this invitation. It isn’t automatically shared around the family or with the child later. For now, you’re choosing what to tell me. Skip days freely, and come back when a thought feels worth sharing. I would love to hear your perspective alongside mine: the hopes, the absurd details, and the affection already gathering around someone we have yet to meet.
OUR LITTLE PROMISE
So send me a little from your side of the waiting. A memory, a laugh, a thing you hope to teach or show this new person. We don’t need to have everything figured out to welcome someone with love. We appear to have made an excellent start on the socks.
With love, another hopeful member of the welcoming committee
