Regarding the seventeen open tabs

Dear you, with rather a lot currently open,

ARTICLE I

An unscheduled meeting with no agenda

There appear to be several things occupying your attention. Possibly all the things. Somewhere among them is a small administrative task which has become emotionally larger than its actual size would suggest. I am not here to add an eighteenth tab. I would like to offer a place to say a little of what is taking up room, if that would feel useful.

You do not have to begin at the beginning or organize the situation for me. Start with the thought that keeps interrupting the others, the minor irritation with unexpectedly excellent stamina, or the sentence you have almost said several times today. I can listen without a contents page. The story may arrive in the same order the day threw it at you.

ARTICLE II

Invisible work may enter the record

There is the list of things you did, and then there is the vast additional occupation of remembering things might need doing. The appointment. The reply. The thing that will run out at precisely the wrong moment. A day can contain an alarming amount of management while producing very little that anyone would think to photograph. I would like to hear how that day felt for you.

You do not need to prove that you have been busy enough to be tired. Nor must you locate a silver lining before sending the report. If a nice thing happened, I would love to hear it. If the nicest thing was that one particular email did not arrive, I understand that we are celebrating a subtle but meaningful event.

You can tell me the day was a lot without attaching a proposal for improving it.
ARTICLE III

The optimization consultant has not been invited

When somebody describes a full day, people sometimes respond by reorganizing it for them. Suddenly there is a system, a technique, and a cheerful proposal to get up earlier. I would like to avoid becoming that person in your afternoon. You can tell me what is difficult without thereby requesting a complete redesign of your habits and a new collection of storage containers.

If you want practical help, say so. If you want listening, say that. If you do not yet know, we need not settle the question before you speak. I am interested in understanding what you mean, rather than delivering an answer to a problem I have invented from the first half of your sentence. My imaginary consultant badge can remain in the drawer.

ARTICLE IV

Nothing has to become a wholesome activity

This minute does not require a candle, a serene corner, or the voice of someone who has achieved an excellent relationship with their inbox. You can be ordinary, rumpled, and a little cross with a very small object. You do not have to turn describing your day into another thing to do beautifully. I would rather hear you than a carefully arranged impression of calm.

There is also no obligation to finish the thought. A sentence can remain unresolved without being chased around until it supplies a useful lesson. If all you want to say is that today was a lot, I can receive that information. You need not follow it with the minutes of a meeting about how tomorrow will definitely be more efficiently conducted.

ARTICLE V

A place to leave a little, not another task

Open the invitation when you want and choose video, a voice note with the camera off, or writing. Sixty seconds is one possible beginning, not a quota or a maximum. A few words can be enough; a longer account can have more room. You can review the reply before sending it, with no obligation to make your face look delighted by the opportunity.

A reply comes to me, the hosting person, rather than automatically going to a group. It is a message to me, not an unshared journal entry, so choose what you want to include. I may see it later; use our usual way to contact me if you want a timely conversation. Skip days, pause, or leave this aside. I emphatically decline to become one more unfinished item you must remember.

OUR LITTLE PROMISE

Beneath the jokes about tabs is a simple wish: I would like you to have room to be heard without first making everything sound manageable.

Bring one thought if you want. Or come another day. The invitation does not become overdue.

With affection, and no action items for you
